CMOR Working the Hill
By Howard Fienberg, Director of Government Affairs and LaToya Lang,
State Legislative Director
March 2008

Taking full advantage of the proximity of our Government Affairs office to Capitol Hill to “Shield the Profession”, CMOR continues to meet with Congressmen, state legislators, legislative staff, and various policy "movers and shakers."

CMOR Cited During House of Representatives Hearing on “Robocalls”

In his opening statement at a December 6 hearing in the House of Representatives’ Subcommittee on Elections, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-22), ranking member of the Subcommittee on Elections, cited CMOR and our concerns about various bills being considered that would regulate automated political calls. Rep. McCarthy’s remarks followed a CMOR meeting with his legislative staff.

Taking CMOR Volunteers to the Hill

CMOR took Stephen Murrill (MetaResearch), a member of CMOR’s State Capitol Network to meet with Kyle Victor, legislative staffer for Rep. Doris Matsui (D-CA), to discuss Census funding, robopolling, data security and push polls.

Hill Meetings with Congressmen & Congressional Staff

  • CMOR staff met with the Democratic and Republican staff for the Senate Rules & Administration Committee, successfully protecting the research profession in Chairman Feinstein’s political “robocalls” legislation BEFORE it was introduced.
  • CMOR staff met with Rep. Bob Brady (D-PA-01) to discuss political and election issues.
  • CMOR staff also met with legislative staff for Rep. Mike McCaul (R-TX-10), Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT), Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA), Rep. Michelle Bachmann (R-MN), Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), the Senate Republican Conference, and Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA), as well as the Democratic staff of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to introduce them to CMOR and our issues.

Meetings near the Hill

CMOR staff have also been busy meeting with policy people off Capitol Hill:

  • Discussed online behavioral research with Mary Engle, Associate Director of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Advertising Practices Division;
  • Discussed privacy issues with Peter Swire, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress and “Privacy Czar” under President Bill Clinton’s administration; and
  • Discussed trade and telecommunications policy with the Japanese Embassy
