CMOR Working the Hill and the Congressional Black Caucus This Fall
By Howard Fienberg, Director of Government Affairs,
and LaToya Lang, State Legislative Director
December 2007
CMOR continues to meet with Congressmen, state legislators, legislative staff and various policy movers and shakers, taking full advantage of the proximity of our Government Affairs office to Capitol Hill.
Hill Meetings with Congressmen
Since late September, CMOR has met with Rep. Jim Matheson (D-UT-2) and Rep. Steve Kagen (D-WI-) as part of larger coalitions, discussing consumer protection, telecommunications and technology. CMOR specifically discussed the national Do Not Call Registry with Rep. Matheson, and Rep. Kagen’s Chief of Staff raised the issue of the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) restrictions on using autodialers to call cell phones.
CMOR also corresponded via email, with Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL-06) on the TCPA issue and various telemarketing concerns.
The Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference
As part of the Legislative Conference of the Congressional Black Caucus, CMOR GA staff met with Representatives John Lewis (GA-5), Jesse L. Jackson (IL-2), Stephanie Tubbs Jones (OH-11), Kendrick B. Meek (FL-17), Ed Towns (NY-10), Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (NY-15) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD-5), as well as Maryland Delegate Shirley Nathan Pulliam, District 10, Baltimore County. CMOR also took part in discussions regarding health information technology and reducing health disparities for minorities, a “braintrust” on telecommunication issues impacting minorities, and various other topics on issues that impact minorities.
Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM)
CMOR GA staff also recently presented on a panel on confidentiality at the annual FCSM conference.
